Cellofan in Reels for the Wrapping of Tubolar Items in the Roto-Traslaction Process

In the 70ies the first fishing rods in composites were made with phenolic resin and fiberglass. Cellofan P45 – P60 was the first film used for this production, thanks to its release capabilities from phenolic resins.

Nowadays it is used in the roto-translaction process for manufacturing composite tubolar items in 2 different ways: with phenolic resins in direct contact and as over wrapping in particular to made an  heat shield, for all thermosetting resins.

General Features of Cellofan in the Manufacturing of Composites

Today the use of phenolic resins in the production of composites is limited to particular fields (items that have to withstand high temperatures or aggressive environments, such as exhaust pipes of sea engines).

Nevertheless Cellofan P60 has found a new youth in the manufacturing of tubolar composites with epoxy and polyesther resins and with fiberglass, carbon and arammidic fibers because it is extremely effective when used as over wrapping film. In particular it improves the structural properties of tubolar composite items of top quality and/or with an high thickness of composite’s walls.

Cellofan P45 – P60 has good mechanical properties and a limited but significant heat-shrinkage during the curing cycle. The material is hygroscopic and the moisture absorption can be used to give extra compression during cooking.

The chemical nature of the film (regenerated cellulose film) permits to use it with medium – high – and very high temperatures of polymerization (up to 200-220 C). Thus it can act as an heat shield in case of high polymerization’s temperatures.

The film is treated on both sides and releases easily from phenolic resins at the end of the process.

Phenolic Resins and Direct Contact

When used in direct contact with the phenolic resin a glossy surface of the composite is obtained. In the production of tubolar composite items light or medium steps given by the thickness of the tape are left on the surface.

In the roto-translaction process it is used to wrap the tubolar composite item to manufacture in direct contact with the phenolic resin (primary wrapping).

It has the functions to give high compaction to the different layers of fibers in the wrapping phase, to keep all the termosetting resin within the item during the liquid stage, to give good compression to the manufactured article in the polymerization phase and to guarantee an easy release at the end of polymerization.

Over Wrapping Film and Heat Shield

The alternative use is as over wrapping film (double taping of compaction and compression), for all types of resins, to produce tubolar composite items of top quality (industrial rolls, high end sports articles, structural tubolars with high thickness of composite’s walls).

In this way if the film is tensioned at its maximum load a further light step on the surface could be made.

Usually another film is placed in contact with prepregs and Cellophane P60 is used both to give extra compaction and compression to the rod and to act as a thermal shield in presence of high temperatures of process.

With this method, if it is properly carried out, the use of Cellofan P60 gets significant improvements in the composite’s structure.

Release Films and Tubolar Composite’s Features

Our films for the production of composites have outstanding performances only if they are properly used. Very important are, in particular, the wrapping of the tape and polymerization’s conditions.

On this subject a specific paper is available on request.
