Polipropilene Speciale in Reels for the Wrapping of Tubolar Items in the Roto-Traslaction Process

Polipropilene Speciale has been developed in the 80ies, for the first epoxy and polyesther termosetting resins and it is used for the production of composite materials made with glass, carbon and arammidic fibers.

Polipropilene Speciale is used mainly in the roto-translaction process to produce tubolar composites with circular and elliptical sections, and with conical or heavily conical structures (for example the top parts of fishing rods).

Two thicknesses are available. The thin film (20 micron) has been designed to get a surface with very light steps, almost smooth. Thicker film (28 micron) makes higher steps but has better mechanical features. Both versions fit well with irregular or highly conical surfaces, so can be used for highly conical rods and ovals

General Features of Polipropilene Speciale in the Manufacturing of Composites

Polipropilene Speciale is made on our specifications, with a targeted recipe concerning the polypropylene grade and a peculiar production process which gives mechanical strength and other physical features.

Polipropilene Speciale film has poor/medium mechanical properties and a limited heat-shrinkage during the curing cycle. The special formulation of the film permits to use it with medium-high temperatures of polymerization (up to 140-150 C).

Thanks to the special chemical-physical composition Polipropilene Speciale has release capabilities on one side of the film. This film is not coated with laque or silicone for release purposes. In this way no transfer of coating or silicone and no contamination of the composite is possible, and there is no need to clean or sand the item after polymerization.

Direct Contact with Tubolar Composites

When used in direct contact with the resin a glossy surface of the composite is obtained. In the production of tubolar items very light or light steps given by the thickness of the tape are left on the surface. The thin film (20 micron) in particular, has been designed to get extremely light steps (almost smooth). In this case, to obtain tubolar composites with structural characteristics, an over wrapping with another film is compulsory.

In the roto-translaction process it is used in reels to wrap the rod to manufacture in direct contact with the prepregs (primary wrapping).

It has the functions to give compaction to the different layers of prepregs in the wrapping phase, to keep all the termosetting resin within the item in the liquid stage, to give compression to the manufactured article in the polymerization phase and to guarantee an easy release at the end of polymerization.

Product Availability

The available nominal thicknesses are 20 and 28 micron, the density is 0,91 g/cm3, the nominal unit weights are 18 and 25 grams per square metre, the nominal yields 55 and 40 square metres per kilogram.

Release Films and Tubolar Composite’s Features

Our films for the production of composites have outstanding performances only if they are properly used. Very important are, in particular, the wrapping of the tape and polymerization’s conditions.

On this subject a specific paper is available on request.
